Thread Vein Removal Aftercare

Home | Treatments | Aftercare

Thanks for attending your recent treatment appointment with Dr Newmans Clinic. We hope you had a warm and caring experience delivered by our thread vein experts.

Our clinical team will have taken you through our post treatment aftercare information during your visit, but as a reminder, the below article will provide you with guidance around next steps and what to expect over the healing period.

Thread vein removal aftercare

When it comes to thread vein removal, the aftercare process is just as important as the treatment itself. Proper aftercare will ensure that the treatment area heals faster, helps to prevent infection and maximises the effects of your treatment. Below we offer aftercare advice for our (thermocoagulation) treatment and our Micro Sclerotherapy treatment.

Veinwave Aftercare (typically carried out on the face)

What to expect after Veinwave treatment:

It is completely normal to have red, slightly raised areas from treatment, and these inflamed areas should subside within a few days.

You may also have some patchy dry skin or light scabbing.  If this occurs, it’s best to leave the area alone, and avoid exfoliating or picking the skin.

Avoid vigorous exercise, sauna, sunbathing, laser, waxing, shaving, facial massage, facial exfoliation, and swimming for 1 week.

The healing process does take time. The veins will continue to fade during a period of 4-6 weeks post treatment. However, one treatment session is unlikely to be enough and you might require more. A course of a minimum of two to four treatments is usually recommended to achieve the best results. We allow 4-6 weeks between treatments.

Our skincare recommendations after Veinwave treatment:

Try to use only water to wash your skin for the first 24 hours and avoid cleansers and toners.

We recommended waiting 24-48 hours before applying makeup.

Aloe vera gel is extremely useful to use on the treated areas to soothe and calm your treated skin.

You can go back to your usual skincare routine after 24 hours (including SPF) but avoid harsh, perfumed, astringent, acid or alcohol-based products for about 1 week.

To help prevent the appearance of further thread veins please regularly apply SPF 50 to your skin. Limit sun exposure, especially sunbed use.

Micro Sclerotherapy Aftercare (typically carried out on the legs)

What to expect following Micro Sclerotherapy treatment:

You will notice the treated thread veins will look slightly red and inflamed following treatment. This inflammation is completely normal and will settle within 2-3 weeks as your body absorbs the treated veins.

Some thread veins will gradually fade and within 4-6 weeks following treatment, some will completely disappear but every patient and every thread vein responds uniquely to treatment.

Some areas may require several treatment sessions to achieve optimum results due to how the Sclerotherapy works.

We typically recommend 4-6 weeks between treatments to give all the inflamed veins time to settle and heal.

Bruising or tenderness may occur, but it is generally mild and settles in a few days.

There can be a stinging or burning sensation after treatment but this often improves within a few hours. Any residual pain is usually minimal and resolves after 1-2 days.

Micro Sclerotherapy is extremely effective at diminishing the appearance of thread veins. However, during the healing process, a brown discolouration can develop in the treated areas. This discolouration, or pigmentation, is temporary and generally resolves over weeks to months as the thread veins get absorbed by the body. If your skin pigments easily, this healing process may take even longer.

Our aftercare recommendations following Micro Sclerotherapy treatment:

Cotton roll dressings will have been taped to the injected areas to apply direct pressure, helping the veins heal. Ideally these should be kept on and remain dry for 2 days. Some patients find wearing 40 denier tights is a great tip to help keep dressings in place.

After the two days, you may find it is easier to remove the dressing after soaking them in the shower or bath.

Maintain your normal activities with plenty of walking throughout the day.

We ask that you avoid flying for a full 7 days after treatment to reduce the risk of developing a deep vein thrombosis.

As best you can, try to avoid standing for long periods of time and avoid strenuous physical activities such as high impact aerobics, weightlifting and running for 1 week after treatment.

We also recommend avoiding hot baths, saunas and sunbathing for at least 1 week after treatment, as these can increase inflammation and prolong the healing process. If you are going to be out in the sun, don’t forget to use SPF 50+ on the treated areas.

It’s best to avoid leg waxing for 4-6 weeks, as this can further irritate your skin.

If you develop an area of increasing red, hot, painful skin that does not improve with pain relief, please contact our aftercare team and send pictures of the affected area to aftercare@ukveinclinic.com. While a highly unlikely scenario, if you experience any severe pain following treatment, don’t forget you can contact the office team by email: clinic@ukveinclinic.com or telephone number: 020 3002 2274 for our aftercare team.
