Rosacea and spider veins are two common dermatological conditions that affect millions of people worldwide. While they may seem unrelated at first glance, there's growing evidence suggesting a potential link between them.
At Dr Newmans Clinic, we’re passionate about spider vein treatment, and believe knowledge is power when it comes to making informed decisions about treatment available to you. We want to get to the bottom of whether rosacea causes spider veins, or whether they’re two conditions that can occur alongside each other.
Rosacea is a common, chronic skin condition with symptoms being facial redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes small, red bumps resembling acne on the face. It usually affects the central face, including the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead, and although the exact cause of rosacea remains unclear, factors such as genetics, environmental triggers, and vascular abnormalities are believed to play a role.
Spider veins, medically known as telangiectasia but also known as thread veins, are small, dilated blood vessels that appear close to the surface of the skin, resembling spider webs or tree branches. They can develop anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the legs and face. Although usually harmless, they can be considered unsightly for many and can cause some discomfort for some people who have severe cases.
There is some evidence to suggest that there is a potential association between rosacea and the development of spider veins, with one theory being that the chronic inflammation seen in rosacea may lead to the dilation of blood vessels, including those in the skin. This dilation could contribute to the formation of spider veins over time.
It has also been considered that certain skin care products and treatments used to manage rosacea symptoms may actually exacerbate vascular issues (such as spider veins), which is more reason to link the two conditions.
Overall, there is not enough evidence to say that there is a direct cause and effect relationship between rosacea and spider veins, but we do know that patients who suffer with rosacea are more likely to have spider veins visible on their face.
At Dr Newmans Clinic, we understand the importance of addressing both rosacea and spider veins comprehensively to minimise the symptoms as much as possible. Thanks to years of research and experience, spider veins of all sizes, including those that appear on the face, can be treated with minimally-invasive procedures, most notably our Veinwave technology.
There are a number of approaches to removing spider veins on the face, but the best way to treat them is a process known as ‘thermal coagulation.’ This process involves collapsing and sealing the damaged veins so that they are naturally reabsorbed into the body. Here at Dr Newmans Clinic, we use a specific form of this treatment known as Veinwave, which is a completely non-invasive treatment, which simply involves applying a precisely targeted source of heat to seal and gently remove spider veins on your face.
While treating existing rosacea and spider veins is important if you want to reduce the symptoms, taking preventive measures can also help reduce the amount of flare ups you experience, as well as the progression of the condition. Patients with rosacea should try to identify and avoid triggers such as sun exposure, spicy foods, alcohol, and certain skincare products that they know make the symptoms worse. Maintaining a gentle skincare routine and using sunscreen daily is always advised as it can help protect the skin barrier and prevent further vascular damage.
At Dr Newmans Clinic, we're always looking to learn and find out more about dermatological issues, the impact they can have on vein health, and we’re committed to delivering innovative solutions to our patients.
